Karepa camp 2020

Our traditional Karepa camp was held July 2.-11. After some months rather many estonian players gathered together to enjoy nice place in north coast of Estonia, more than 100km from Tallinn. Unfortunately nobody from aboard was able to join. In past years players from many countries have visited Karepa – latvians, finnish, russians, swedish, turkish, chinese, czech, aserbaidjan, from Uzbekistan, China, Chinese Taipei – maybe I forgot something. It was my 32nd summer in Karepa, so 31 years have past from first camp 🙂 and I have forgot lot of details.

First big event in camp was Mind Sport pentathlon for pairs. You can check results here – http://renju.net/media/tourninfo.php?tournament_id=2196. You can easily recognize players from first and third pair, but some words about silver winners. Marten Meikop is owner and programmer of vint.ee, who is now heavily working to make vint.ee better for Youth World Cup in the beginning of August. Tiit Vunk is sudoku World Champion 2016, but also around 1-2 dan level in renju.

Second big event was “Karepa closed” tournament. 30 players started competition, among them Martin Hõbemägi, Georg-Romet Topkin, Timo Ilu, Johann Lents as biggest favorites. Georg got first loss already in second round, from Sander Piik. Johann lost to Kuno in 3rd round. 2 leaders with 3 points, Martin and Timo met in 4th round. Martin wasnt enough careful in opening stage and Timo became the only leader. In 5th round Martin and Georg received already their second loss – accordingly from Kuno and Timo and were kicked out from battle to first place. After this round Timo leaded with 5 points, followed by Johann, Kuno and Markus with 4 points. In 6th round Kuno and Markus didnt show best shape against Timo and Johann. Jaan Oskar Narva and Rauno Lääne fought harder against Martin and Georg, but finally favorites took their points.

In last round Timo played with Johann. Before round there was theoretical possibility for Johann to get 1-st place (later was clear that Timo’s coeficent came better), but finally both were rather tired. So Johann accepted Timo’s draw offer, when both didnt have much time left. Kuno won his game against Kaur Kaljola and deserved 3rd place in tournament.

Here are final results of Karepa close

By results of that tournament (and rating) we divided players into to groups for next tournament.

Karepa Open AT

However, some strong players needed to leave from camp and some took rest. So Karepa Open AT  was weaker than Karepa closed top. Still, it was nice to see Ardi Raag’s success. He is mainly chess player, who plays renju almost only once per year, but as we saw he havent lose his skills.

Karepa Open BT was also very interesting.  Favorites Jaan Oskar and Mairon met in last round. Mairon missed his rather easy win and Jaan Oskar became winner. Martin Hõbemägi’s cousins played their first real renju tournament and showed good results as beginners:

Finally we played exciting superfut tournament July 10. Winner was Sander Piik.

Superfut tournament. In center Sander Piik is showing his skills.

Next year Karepa camp is planned July 3.-12. Some free places in camp are still left 🙂 .
